Kendrick Lamar’s “HiiiPoWeR” is the first single off of his upcoming album “Section 80″ and shit, I’m speechless with this song. It’s been a while since a rapper has gone full out like this, and given “the listener” such a masterpiece. Lets break this single down verse by verse.
[Verse 1] We open the song with an auto tuned Lamar with the following lyrics: “The sky is fallin, the wind is callin, stand for somethin or die in the morning.” Let me just say, that one line already had me hooked, the first time hearing this song. J.Cole’s beat emerges into the scene, and Lamar starts. He says he has visions of MLK staring at him, and Malcolm Little hexing him. At one point he says that the haters weren’t able to hate because his shit was just to good, so they finally decided to start riding the bandwagon. Everything on TV is imaginary and instead of making up our own imagination, we stick to our TVs and other garbage, is what Kendrick Lamar is trying to point out. Going back to that imagination, Ken is already ahead of us and is making his own pyramids, making his own hieroglyphics. Were told we should join in.
[Hook] Throw your hands up for Hiii PoWeR! Coming off that verse, we get a hook that resembles Yeezy’s single “So Appalled” and Lamar pulls it off pretty nicely. It’s not much of a rip off, and he ties it in together. It’s catchy, simple and completely sticks to you.
[Verse 2] We get to the second verse, and get a little more detailed, to understand what the song is about. Going even harder, Lamar has a message in the lyrics that are loud and clear. Momma Dukes always told him to pray for the weak, but he’s not able to do that when his inner demons get the best of him. He tries to turn to God and prays to save him because, the Devil is working extra hours to keep him down. Frightening at the least, Lamar is waiting for that next Land mine to explode, and kill him while hes moonwalking. He claims he cannot bear to see what the actions of 2012 might to do him, and the people around him. “Who ever said a black man was in the illuminati” is what he asks us. In my opinion, he may be referring to Obama, or some rappers in the game. I may be a bit off, but to me it’s a bit unclear so I’m just expressing my opinion. Once again, he tells us to be creative and escape the bubble we are in. The bubble that the guys behind the scenes want us to be in. Build your own pyramids.
[Bridge] Were told that it’s time to fight the system everyday, and we gotta wake up. We were down for to long, but it’s not to late, so get up and fight back is basically what is being said in this bridge. PoWeRful.
[Verse 3] “Who ever said a black man was in the illuminati?” Were asked again. When Lamar dies, he wants his autopsy results to be viewed by everybody, that way he can display what the government has been hitting him up with, and what the truth really is. He also says that the truth is so frightening and can make a man or women go insane. This explains to us why Cobain and Hill aren’t around anymore because they couldn’t take the pain. The message is clear in this verse, that we need to rebel and fight for what we believe in, and start riots against the government.
Overall: Kendrick Lamar tends to pull of what could be, simply the greatest single in the last 5 years, when it comes to being realistic. We obviously had some classics along the way, but I think over time, if we truly reach 2030, and there were teens who weren’t around for this, it will still be graded as an amazing single. As soon as I was done listening to this single, I had a true feeling that it was an instant classic. It will never go out of tune, for generations to come because it trespass so many boundaries and lines, other rappers would never dare to cross. As a first here on the site, this will be my first review that will be receiving 5/5 stars. The lyrics are on point, his delivery has nice chemistry with the work of J.Cole and the hook just sticks to you. Kendrick Lamar’s 3rd album “Section 80″ dropping soon in a retailer near you.
